Miftah Dar As-Saadah is a piece of Islamic literature by Abu Abd Allah Muhammad Ibn Al-Hasan Al Shirazi, known as Ibn Rushd or Averroes. The work was published by al-Maarif under the patronage of Ahmad ibn Yusuf Al Qarawiyyin in 1382 C.E. in Fez, Morocco. Miftah Dar As-Saadah stands alongside the works of Al Ghazali in defining the status of philosophy in Islam. The full name of the book is Miftah Dar As-Saaadat fi Hukm Alfaz Al-Falasifah wa Ulil Adh-Dhaalim (The Key to the Treasure in the Judgment on The Philosophers and their Opponents). This title indicates that it is an introduction to philosophy in Islam, defining its real place and considering it necessary for Muslims. Al-Maarif has published this work in the 7th century after the Islamic Revolution initiated by Ali Ibn Abi Talib. Prior to that, in Al-Andalus, Ibn Rushd had worked on many other books such as Al-Muwassah and Al-Muhadhdhab. The book did not mention any author of the work or a place of its completion, but did mention a date for its printing: 1382 C.E. This book was banned by religious authorities of Baghdad and Damascus during their disputes with Molla Abu Ismael Amuli, a prominent Persian scientist from Shiraz. In response to the ban, Albohayreddin Andalusi printed it in 1417 C. E. The book contains three sections, each of which has 10 chapters. The first section looks at different schools of philosophers and what they say about God, the universe, and man. The second section presents the correct teachings about the world, matter, and man according to Islam. The third section focuses on the relationship between religion and philosophy in general terms. Based on this book which is one of his best works, Ibn Rushd was offered a seat at Barcelona University to teach philosophy after it was banned by Spanish King Sancho II (1169-1196) in 1248 C.E. Ibn Rushd started to accept the invitation, but withdrew it before he arrived. The book is available in English translation by Bernard Lewis in "Ibn Khaldun: Threeages of the World (1332-1406), Volume Two", edited by Lewis and edited with an introduction & notes by Silvia Vinci (New York: Cambridge University Press, 1997). 81eaaddfaf 47
